Manchester United have reached the kind of weekend where the result matters more than the performance. Bournemouth arrive at Old Trafford on Sunday with Michael Carrick under growing pressure, and another setback would make an already difficult start to the season much harder to defend.
United are 13th in the Premier League after seven matches and have not won in seven games in all competitions. The mood became even heavier after a 4-1 defeat away to Como in the Champions League. For a club that expected to be pushing back towards the top, this is not simply a slow start anymore.
Why Bournemouth has become a must-win game
There are still plenty of matches left, but United need something to stop the slide. Bournemouth are not coming to Manchester simply to survive, either. They arrive after a memorable 3-0 Europa League victory over AC Milan, a result that should give them confidence before the trip to Old Trafford.
That makes this a dangerous fixture for Carrick. United need to play with urgency without becoming desperate. An early goal would settle the stadium, but conceding first could quickly turn the atmosphere nervous.
Carrick’s future is now part of the story
Reports have already linked United with possible alternatives, including Julian Nagelsmann. Sky Sports’ Transfer Centre reported that Nagelsmann is expected to be a leading candidate if United decide to make a managerial change.
That does not mean Carrick has already lost his job. It does mean every result is now being viewed through the question of what comes next. A convincing win over Bournemouth would buy him breathing room. A defeat would make the discussion much louder.
United need a response, not another excuse
The biggest concern is not one bad night in Europe. It is the pattern. United have struggled to turn possession into control, confidence has dropped and the team has too often looked vulnerable when matches become stretched.
Sunday offers a chance to reset the conversation. Carrick needs his senior players to take responsibility and his attack to be sharper around the box. The supporters will accept mistakes if they see intensity and direction. What will be harder to accept is another flat display.

For Carrick, Bournemouth is only one league match on paper. In reality, it feels much bigger. Old Trafford needs a win, and so does its manager.
