LASK vs Liverpool produced a nine-goal Champions League thriller in Austria on Wednesday, with Liverpool winning 6-3 as Bradley Barcola announced himself in red with a memorable hat-trick.
The victory gave Andoni Iraola’s side six points from their opening two league-phase matches and provided an immediate response after their domestic setback against Manchester City.
LASK vs Liverpool: Reds take control before half-time
LASK started with energy, but Liverpool quickly took command. Ronald Araújo broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute, powering home a header from Kostas Tsimikas’ corner for his first Liverpool goal.
Just two minutes later, Barcola opened his own Reds account. Rio Ngumoha’s dangerous run unsettled the home defence before Lewis Koumas reacted quickly and supplied Barcola, who finished confidently. Florian Wirtz then unlocked LASK again in the 37th minute, sending Barcola through to make it 3-0 before the break.
LASK vs Liverpool: Barcola completes a special hat-trick
Liverpool maintained the pressure after half-time as the LASK vs Liverpool contest opened up. Jeremie Frimpong headed in Tsimikas’ cross in the 51st minute to stretch the advantage to four. Robert Ljubičić pulled one back for LASK, but any hope of a dramatic comeback disappeared when Barcola converted Frimpong’s low delivery in the 66th minute to complete the first senior hat-trick of his career.
For Barcola, the timing could hardly have been better. The French winger had not scored in his opening Liverpool appearances, but his movement, composure and link-up play with Wirtz transformed this European night into a potential turning point.
LASK vs Liverpool: Koumas scores as hosts fight to the finish
Koumas finally got his reward in the 72nd minute after having earlier efforts ruled out for offside, finishing another Frimpong delivery to make it 6-1. LASK refused to disappear, however, and Florian Flecker struck twice late on to produce the remarkable 6-3 final score.
The three goals conceded will give Iraola something to examine, but Liverpool’s attacking depth was the bigger message. A youthful starting XI produced six away goals, while Barcola, Araújo and Koumas all enjoyed landmark moments. For more Reds coverage, read our latest Liverpool injury update on Cody Gakpo.
Liverpool now turn their attention back to the Premier League before hosting Villarreal in their next Champions League fixture. On the evidence of this explosive night in Linz, confidence in the Reds’ attack should be considerably higher.
