FIFA World Cup records show how hard it is to dominate football’s biggest tournament. Pelé, Kylian Mbappé, Lionel Messi, Cafu and Just Fontaine have produced numbers that still stand apart in World Cup history.

However, the records come from different eras. In every case, they show that one great tournament is difficult, while repeated success creates a legend.

FIFA World Cup records: Pelé remains the only three-time winner

Pelé won the World Cup with Brazil in 1958, 1962 and 1970. As a result, he remains the only player to lift the trophy three times.

More than half a century later, that record still stands. Moreover, it remains one of the clearest measures of Pelé’s place in football history. FIFA continues to recognise him as the only three-time World Cup winner.

World Cup scoring records: Mbappé leads the all-time chart

Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappé owns the record for the most goals in men’s World Cup history with 22.

He built that total across several tournaments. In addition, his pace, finishing and knockout performances have pushed him into a group that very few players ever reach.

World Cup appearance record: Messi leads with 34 matches

At the same time, Lionel Messi has made 34 World Cup appearances, more than any other player.

In addition, the Argentina captain has reached three World Cup finals. Therefore, he now shares the record for final appearances with Brazil legend Cafu.

Across his long World Cup career, Messi has collected a title, individual awards and major records. Ebuss Sports also covered his 2026 Princess of Asturias Sports Award.

Cafu and Messi share a finals record

Likewise, Cafu appeared in the World Cup final in 1994, 1998 and 2002. Later, Messi matched that total with three final appearances of his own.

Reaching one World Cup final can define a career. However, reaching three shows remarkable consistency across different tournaments and generations.

Just Fontaine’s 13-goal tournament still stands

Meanwhile, Just Fontaine scored 13 goals at the 1958 World Cup. No player has scored more in a single edition of the competition.

Even more impressively, Fontaine reached that mark in only six matches. Still, modern forwards have not matched his single-tournament total.

FIFA World Cup records at a glance

Pelé: 3 World Cup titles
Kylian Mbappé: 22 World Cup goals
Lionel Messi: 34 World Cup appearances
Cafu and Lionel Messi: 3 World Cup final appearances each
Just Fontaine: 13 goals in one World Cup

Overall, these FIFA World Cup records connect different generations of football. Although some may eventually fall, each one reflects a level of performance that very few players have reached.
