Messi’s MLS assists record marks another landmark in his Inter Miami career. The Argentina captain became the first player in Major League Soccer history to record at least 15 assists in three consecutive regular seasons.

The milestone came on 17 October 2026 during Inter Miami’s 3-1 away win over Atlanta United. Messi scored twice and added an assist as Miami extended their winning run. His two goals also took him to 25 league goals for the season at that point.

Why the record is significant

Messi’s scoring numbers naturally receive most of the attention. However, this assist record highlights how much of Inter Miami’s attack still runs through his passing and decision-making. Reaching 15 assists once is difficult; doing it in three straight seasons shows sustained creative production.

Moreover, the record came while Messi continued to carry a heavy scoring burden. That combination makes his 2026 season especially valuable. He is not simply finishing moves. Instead, he is creating them, controlling tempo around the final third and producing decisive actions in multiple ways.

Inter Miami still need the team around him

Individual records do not guarantee trophies. Inter Miami still need defensive stability and consistent support from the rest of the attack. Luis Suárez and Germán Berterame also played major roles in the Atlanta victory, which underlined the importance of spreading the threat around Messi.

From an MLS perspective, the number is also useful because it separates Messi’s production from short bursts of form. Three consecutive 15-assist seasons require repeated chance creation across different opponents and tactical setups. Even when teams defend deeper against Miami, Messi continues to find passing angles that turn controlled possession into clear opportunities.

Understanding Messi’s MLS assists record

Inter Miami’s report identifies a secondary assist in the move for Berterame’s opener. MLS assist totals can include those earlier passes in a scoring move. Readers should therefore compare this number with other MLS records using the same counting system.

The club’s report concerns the Atlanta match on 17 October. Its 25-goal and 15-assist figures describe Messi’s record at that milestone, rather than a claim that no later match has changed his season totals.
