Alejandro Balde’s Barcelona future comes under fresh spotlight

Alejandro Balde’s position at Barcelona has become a talking point again after the left-back struggled for minutes at the start of the 2026/27 season. Reports say competition for places has pushed Balde down the early pecking order, with João Cancelo and young defender Xavi Espart also competing for roles on the left.

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has publicly described the situation as competition for places rather than a simple decision to remove Balde from his plans. That distinction matters because the season is long and squad roles can change quickly.

Why Balde’s minutes have become a story

Balde has been an important Barcelona player in recent seasons, but the arrival of new options and the emergence of Xavi Espart have changed the immediate selection picture. Reports earlier in September also linked Balde with a possible move during the transfer window.

What Flick has said

Flick has explained that Barcelona currently have several full-back options and that nobody expected Xavi Espart to perform at such a high level. He also said Balde is working well in training but wants more playing time.

Could Balde leave Barcelona?

Transfer reports have suggested that Balde could become a January-market name if his lack of minutes continues. That remains a reported possibility rather than a confirmed transfer decision. Barcelona have not announced that Balde is being sold.
