Rybakina year-end No. 1 became official after Elena Rybakina beat Yulia Putintseva in Tokyo, completing a standout 2026 season at the top of women’s tennis.
The WTA announced that Rybakina will finish the season as the world’s No. 1 player for the first time in her career. As a result, she becomes the 17th woman in WTA history to achieve the year-end No. 1 ranking.
Moreover, she is the first player representing Kazakhstan, in singles or doubles and across men’s or women’s tennis, to finish a season at No. 1.
The WTA confirmed the achievement.
Rybakina year-end No. 1 crowns a major season
Rybakina’s season included titles at the Australian Open, US Open, Stuttgart and Ningbo. In addition, she passed 50 match wins during the year, showing the consistency needed to lead the rankings.
Winning on different surfaces has been one of the strongest parts of her campaign. Her powerful serve remains a major weapon, but improved movement and patience in longer rallies have made her more difficult to beat.
Meanwhile, the ranking gives Kazakhstan another major moment in tennis history. Rybakina has already delivered some of the country’s biggest achievements in the sport, and finishing the year at No. 1 adds another milestone.
WTA Finals will celebrate the achievement
Therefore, the WTA is set to present Rybakina with the year-end No. 1 trophy at the WTA Finals in Indian Wells.
For Rybakina, the next challenge will be maintaining that position as rivals target the top ranking in 2027. However, her 2026 results have already guaranteed a place among the season’s biggest stories.
Why the achievement matters
Rybakina becomes the 17th woman in WTA history to finish a season as world No. 1.
